The story of Tashi's life prior to his arrival on the Sonia is a mystery wrapped in an enigma.  Unfortunately, it's rather poorly wrapped.  Tashi is a Kalashtar, a fact that everyone who meets him realises almost instantly due to his appalling disguise, it's just that no-one has the heart to tell him it's so obvious.  Consequently, his pathetic pretence of being just another human continues.
